The Battered Witness

The Battered Witness belongs to Serhio Lichi's Cyprus Ruins Creatures series — a group of large raw figures staged between painting, ruin, and survival. The work looks like a face pulled out of a black field: wounded, alert, almost archaeological, with red marks that read as eyes, signals, or warning lights. Made with an intentionally rough physical surface, the painting keeps the traces of pressure, weather, gesture, and repair. It feels less like a portrait of one person than a witness that has passed through collapse and stayed awake. The black surrounding space gives the figure a monumental presence, while the dense layered center holds the energy of a body, a memory, and a ruined architecture trying to speak again.
